Plans to build seven new homes on vacant land in Oldham has been approved.

An application earlier this year looked to build the homes on a plot of land to the south west of Nether Hey Street near Glodwick.

Last year, a proposal to build five homes on the same site was approved, however the new plans looked to develop another two units.

Now, this second application has been approved and works to build the homes can get underway.

Each house will be made up of three floors and will have four bedrooms, a private rear garden and off-site parking, while the houses will be made up of three semi-detached units and one detached dwelling.

A council planning officer felt the principle of building homes on the land was acceptable due to the fact the land had been developed previously and therefore would be being brought back into use.

As for the impact the homes would have on current residents in the area, the officer said there would be enough distance between the new homes and existing homes so that there should not be a significant loss of light for those currently living in the area.

The officer also said they felt the new homes would not have an "overly oppressive" impact on the current houses.

On the previous application, roughly a dozen residents from the area commented on the proposed plans, with some criticising the scheme while others offered their support for the new homes.

Residents who opposed the proposal were mainly concerned over parking and access, with both Nuttall Street and Nether Hey Street, where the site can be accessed from, being narrow streets where residents park.

Those who objected to the proposal felt it would be made more difficult for cars and pedestrians to enter and exit the estate and that parking was already limited.

Nether Hey Street is an unadopted road, meaning it is not maintained by the highway authority and that residents of the road are responsible for its maintenance.

Some residents felt the development of the new houses would cause damage to the unadopted road, with any necessary repairs then having to be covered by them.

However, several residents expressed their support for the proposal, arguing the homes would bring a vacant plot of land back into use and would address the borough's need for housing.

The new proposal was formally approved on Friday, July 12, with the planning officer concluding that the new homes would not have a "harmful" effect on current residents or a "detrimental" impact on the character of the area.
