A police cordon was then erected on the street, stretching from Waterloo Street to Horsedge Street.

Passers-by on the scene told The Oldham Times there were a number of police cars and uniformed officers scouring the area.

A detective was seen using evidence bags and had found "something on the floor" outside the bank.

Another police car was spotted outside the Town Hall Tavern and pubgoers were reportedly moved on while officers conducted enquiries.

No arrests have been reported.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We are currently still responding to an incident on Yorkshire Street after receiving reports of an assault.

"The extent of the injuries suffered by a man are unclear at this time.

"A scene remains in place whilst our officers conduct their enquiries."

North West Ambulance Service has also been contacted for comment.
