Oldham primary school children have been putting their entrepreneurial skills to the test by making products and pitching their business plans in a Dragon's Den-inspired competition.

Dr Kershaw's Hospice launched its Dragon's Den Enterprise Project for youngsters, to learn about business and raise some well-needed funds in the process.

Year 6 children at Whitegate End Primary and Nursery School entered the competition, which involved teams of six pupils tasked with creating an innovative gift and working out how to manufacture it and write a business plan.

Each team had a business mentor and support from a member of Dr Kershaw's fundraising team which supported and guided them through the task.

Whitegate End pupils entered in multiple groups for the competition and all the groups were chosen to advance through to the final.

Headteacher, Rob Hollingsworth, said the students started by doing some market research before making their products, which ranged from canvasses to slime and phone cases to pet rocks.

The youngsters then brought their ideas and business plans to life at Spindles Shopping Centre in Oldham where they sold their products to members of the public.

Mr Hollingsworth revealed the students' efforts raised more than £600 towards the hospice.

On Thursday (July 11), the youngsters then presented their final results to a group of "dragons" at Oldham Athletic's Boundary Park stadium, including Latics owner Frank Rothwell.

Mr Hollingsworth said: "We are so proud of the young entrepreneurs that we are creating.

"The children raised a significant amount of money for a fantastic cause and represented the Whitegate End badge impeccably.

"Numerous members of the public commented on how brilliant our children were and we hope that they use this as a stepping stone to create their own businesses that change the world when they are older."

It's not the first time Whitegate End has hit headlines for its hardworking and inspirational pupils, either.

Earlier this month, Mr Hollingsworth said the school is home to some "Lionesses in the making" after its girls football team took home the school's league football cup.

Celebrating the success of the Dragon's Den project, Dr Kershaw's also praised the students for their efforts.

In a post on social media, the hospice said: "We've had an incredible time at the Oldham Event Centre for our Junior Dragons' Den Grand Final.

"We've loved listening to the children's pitches.

"Well done and thank you to all of the brilliant schools and teams who got involved, we hope you've had a great time."
