Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has won the 2024 general election, but where did our new prime minister make his fortune?

Unlike many politicians, Sir Keir Starmer was not born into a life of privilege. Starmer was born in Southwark. His father, Rodney Starmer, was a toolmaker and his mother was a nurse.

The lawyer-turned-politician studied at Leeds University and St Edmund Hall, Oxford.

He gained his knighthood in 2014 for his services to ‘law and criminal justice’, and assumed the role of Labour Party Leader in April 2020.

In 2021/2022, Sir Keir Starmer's salary for being a Labour MP was £76,961 and he received an extra £49,193 for being leader of the opposition. He was previously Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service from 2008 to 2013, a role which is known to command a hefty salary.

Where does Keir Starmer live?

Starmer lives in North London.

According to House and Garden, he moved between Archway, Highgate and Stoke Newington, he now lives with his wife Victoria and their two children in Kentish Town. The pair reportedly bought their home in 2004 for around £600,000, and it's roughly doubled in value since.

Keir reportedly also owns seven acres of land in Surrey next to his childhood home, which he inherited in 1996. The Mail on Sunday reported in May 2020, upon Sir Keir’s election as Labour leader, that he owns seven acres of land in Surrey worth up to £10m.

The Starmers have many high-profile neighbours in the area. Mega-stars Harry Styles and Benedict Cumberbatch are regularly seen around the Heath, and Labour colleague Ed Miliband apparently lives just down the road.

The area is steeped in history: Karl Marx, Lucien Freud and George Michael are buried in the famous Highgate Cemetery, and Keats House, where John Keats lived and worked, is open for visitors.

He lives there with his wife Victoria Alexander and their two children, a son Toby and a daughter, who has never been publicly named.

Victoria was a solicitor before working in occupational health at the NHS and becoming a governor at her children’s school. After meeting Keir when they were both working as lawyers, the pair tied the knot in 2007.

Taking into account his land, home, law and political career, Sir Keir Starmer has a net worth of approximately £7.7 million.
