New images show the extent of the sinkhole as United Utilities has issued an update.
Yesterday afternoon (June 27) a sinkhole opened on Park Road, near to the entrance of Alexandra Park.
Initial pictures showed a crack in the tarmac and a dip developing in the centre of the road.
A new image posted onto social media sites, shows the dramatically worse cavity, now affecting both side of the carriage way.
The area is now cordoned off to ensure the safety of people in the area.
The image shows the hole to have widened significantly and the tarmac is now falling in.
United Utilities said the hole was caused due to a collapsed sewer main.
A United Utilities spokesperson said: "The area has now been made safe and a diversion route is in place.
"Our teams are continuing to carry out investigations and plan the necessary repairs.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
Park Road remains closed while repairs are carried underway.
