The shield symbolises the assistance and support given by the dedicated charity to ex-service men and women, and their families, in Oldham since the end of the Boer War.

The Mayor said: “It is a great honour to raise the Armed Forces Flag today and to show our support for the men and women who make up our Armed Forces, including those currently serving, our veterans and cadets.

“Let’s not forget, our freedom exists today because of the sacrifice they made for our present.

"Thank you.”

The shield will now go on display in The Mayor's parlour where invited guests will be able to recognise the dedication for years to come.

Armed Forces Day is on June 29, but the event is nationally commemorated throughout the week of its occurrence with ceremonies such as this, as well as official events on the day hosted by The Armed Forces.
