The smoke was seen for miles around as firefighters battled a blaze at an industrial estate in Rochdale.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service attended a scene on Summer Street at 2pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson said the firefighters battled the blaze throughout the afternoon. Some of them are at the scene on the edge of the town centre today, Sunday, to dampen down any hotspots.

The Fire Investigation Team is due to investigate its cause which, at the time of writing, is unknown.

A spokesperson said: "Before 2pm yesterday (June 22) firefighters were called to reports of a fire at a commercial property on Summer Street in Rochdale. Eight fire engines from Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough, Oldham, Hollins, Blackley and Ashton fire stations arrived at the scene, with another two arriving to assist in efforts to bring the fire under control.

"The incident is scaled down, however, firefighters remain at the scene to continue dampening down any hotspots. Cordons are in place as they await the arrival of Fire Investigation Officers."
