Young performers, artists, writers, and budding events producers in Oldham have been invited to take part in a free course showing what it takes to work in the creative industries.

The course, which has been created by Mossley-based arts organisation Global Grooves, will start in September and run until the end of the year.

Called Creative Careers, the course will see weekly sessions held at the Lyceum Theatre on Union Street and will explore pathways into arts careers.

Those taking part will have the opportunity to create their own event, as well as working as part of the Global Grooves team on a series of exciting winter events.

Young people aged between 16 and 18 who live in the borough and have an interest in music, dance, spoken word, circus, carnival, creative writing, comedy, visual arts and more can apply for one of 20 free places.

The course starts on Monday September 9 and will run until December 9, with the sessions set to be held from 6.15pm to 8.30pm.

Participants will enjoy talks from inspirational guest speakers and will get access to mentoring opportunities. They will learn about freelancing in the arts, and about designing and delivering events, getting the chance to work alongside arts professionals.

Global Grooves, which has more than 20 years of experience in producing arts events internationally and developing young talent, will also support participants with follow up volunteering, placement and employment opportunities.

Participants will also have an option to work towards an Arts Award qualification.

Travel expenses can be claimed back and people interested to join the course are asked to contact organisers ahead of time to discuss any access requirements.

Holly Prest, artistic director, Global Grooves, said: "This course is for 16-18 year olds who feel excited about learning new things and exploring their creative side.

"By joining this course, you can gain a deeper understanding of what goes on in the arts industry behind-the-scenes, through weekly practical tasks that challenge and inspire you. You will also become part of a brand new network of young creatives in Oldham and the surrounding areas.

"If you have an interest in the arts, this is the perfect place to channel your passion, curiosity and drive."

Those looking to participate must apply by 6pm on Monday, September 2, and can do so by visiting globalgrooves.org, while any queries can be sent to holly@globalgrooves.org.
