Daisy Nook Garden Centre is going on the market after more than half a century in the ownership of one family.

The Calder family are selling up after setting up the garden centre opposite Daisy Nook Country Park in 1972.

Richard Calder, the company chairman, said it was inevitable for the garden centre on Stannybrook Road to go on market because there is not another generation to replace him after his retirement at the age of 76.

Agent Christie & Co said the site sits on several acres close to Junction 22 of the M60 motorway and sells a range of products from indoor plants and outdoor plants to furniture and other features for the garden.

There is a popular cafe, Cafe Riverside, with a terrace overlooking the River Medlock, and a sizeable car park.

Mr Calder said: "We have loved running the centre and getting to know so many loyal customers however we do not have another, younger, generation of the family wanting to take it on so it is inevitable that we offer the business for sale.

"We are advertising it as a 'going concern' and hope very much to find a buyer who will continue to develop the business and ensure that our wonderful team of staff stay here. We are advised that this will not be a quick process, so we will be around for quite a while yet, I am sure."

Andrew Birnie, the director of retail and leisure at Christie & Co, said: "We are delighted to have been instructed to sell Daisy Nook Garden Centre on behalf of the Calder family, who have built a fantastic garden centre business over the past 50 plus years.

"With an enviable location next to Daisy Nook Country Park and space to extend and add concessions, this sale represents a fantastic opportunity, and we look forward to finding a suitable owner to take the business forward."
