A yellow weather warning has been issued for Oldham today (Saturday, June 15), with thunderstorms potentially bringing rainfall and disruption.

The warning issued by the Met Office, which lasts between 11am and 10pm, could see "heavy showers", possibly leading some disruption to travel and outdoor activities.

The Met Office said showers and thunderstorms are likely to become more widespread this afternoon and into this evening.

Oldham falls just into the catchment area and the Met Office has said that should the borough see thunderstorms, they will tend to be slow moving, with lightning, hail and heavy rain.

The heaviest showers and thunderstorms could produce as much as 20 mm of rain in less than an hour with one or two places seeing 30-40 mm in two to three hours.

The warning has been issued across most of the North West, as well as the south of Scotland

According to the Met Office, people can expect the following:

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Some flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
  • Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is likely
