All of these cases involving people from Oldham or crimes committed in the town have been before the magistrates or crown courts in recent weeks.

A young man has been sentenced for carrying a meat cleaver in Oldham.

Connor Day, of Woodlands Road, Manchester, was found to be carrying the meat cleaver on Bridge Street in Oldham town centre on August 26 last year.

The 19-year-old pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article in public in October last year and was sentenced at Tameside Magistrates' Court on June 5.

Day was handed 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, while the meat cleaver was ordered to be forfeited and destroyed.

He was also made to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and further costs of £85.

A man who stole thousands of pounds worth of goods from shops and assaulted a police officer has been jailed.

David Handley, of Hawksley Street, Oldham, began his offending on March 28, when he stole £200 worth of meat and cleaning products from the Co-op on Ripponden Road.

Then, on May 31, the 37-year-old stole £2,000 worth of beauty and fragrance items from a Boots shop at Altrincham Retail Park in Altrincham.

On the same day, in Salford, Handley assaulted a male police officer acting in the exercise of his functions as an emergency worker.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court on June 3, Handley pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from a shop and one count of assaulting an emergency worker and was sentenced.

He was jailed for a total of 17 weeks for his actions.

A man who breached a restraining order and damaged property has avoided jail.

Glynn Butterworth, of Trowbridge Road, Denton, attended an address in Hathershaw on April 13 which he was prohibited from doing so due to a restraining order issued back in 2020.

The 57-year-old was on the same street on May 10 when he caused £250 worth of damage to a garden gate.

Butterworth pleaded guilty to breaching a restraining order and criminal damage on May 13 and was sentenced at Manchester Magistrates' Court on June 3.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and must provide samples for nine months as part of his drug rehabilitation.

Butterworth must also attend 15 days of rehabilitation activity requirement.
