A young man from Oldham died from head injuries in a car crash, a coroner's court heard as the inquest into his death opened.

Atif Zaheer of Millbank Close in Oldham was found dead at the scene of a car crash on Greenacres Road at around 11.41pm on Sunday (June 2).

At the opening of Mr Zaheer's inquest at Rochdale Coroner's Court, held today (Wednesday, June 12), assistant coroner Matthew Cox heard evidence from Greater Manchester Police coroner's officer, Kathy Dixon, into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ms Dixon said the 26-year-old worked as a mechanic in Oldham and had been travelling as a passenger when the car he was in collided with an "unattended parked car".

She said the vehicle then spun and overturned.

The married man was found deceased at the scene and was formally identified by police.

A post-mortem revealed Mr Zaheer died from blunt force head injuries. 

Tributes have since been pouring in for Mr Zaheer who has been described as a "true gentleman" and "a pleasant young man" who had "good manners" and was "always smiling".

Greater Manchester Police arrested two men in their 20s on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police confirmed to The Oldham Times that the two men have since been released on bail.

Detective Constable Alex Giblin, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, at the time said: "This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life, and our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones.

"They will be supported by specially trained officers at this distressing time.

"We are working tirelessly to get answers for them, but I urge anyone who has any information, or who may have witnessed the incident to please come forward and help with our enquiries."
