A man who racially abused a staff member after stealing from Boots and broke into a Halfords store has been jailed.

Lewis McDermott appeared at Tameside Magistrates' Court on May 22, where he pleaded guilty to theft, racially aggravated intentional harassment and burglary with intent to steal.

The court heard that on May 20, the 24-year-old went into the Boots shop at Chadderton Mall, where he stole skin care products worth £170.75.

When challenged by a member of staff, McDermott, of no fixed abode, racially abused the employee.

On May 21, the following day, McDermott broke into the Halfords store in Oldham town centre on King Street.

When police arrived, they found McDermott there as he had not stolen anything yet.

He was arrested and brought before the court the following day.

McDermott was jailed for eight weeks in total for his actions and was made to pay total compensation of £375.75 to the two stores.
