The maternity ward in Royal Oldham Hospital is celebrating the arrival of new hearing equipment which will help deaf mothers.

Maternity services in Oldham have had a boost with the introduction of new devices for mums.

It is hoped the new kit, fundraised by the Northcare Charity, will help support patients' communication and hearing needs when in hospital, particularly for new mums who may struggle to communicate with staff or hear their newborn babies cry.

Lesley Chan, assistant director of maternity services said: “Women who are deaf may not be able to hear their newborns cry or when our staff are on a ward round.

"The equipment allows us to maintain their privacy and dignity whilst in hospital and gives them access to the same care as someone who can hear.

"A huge thanks to our Northcare charity team for funding the purchase of this simple piece of equipment.”
