One street has reopened but another remains closed following more than a year of works on the Oldham Way bridges.

In February last year, maintenance works began on the Oldham Way bridges at Wellington Street and Waterloo Street.

Oldham Council said works were necessary to make sure the structures were fit for purpose so they can be used for years to come, with Oldham Way being one of the busiest roads in the borough.

The works were originally scheduled to finish in November last year, but have continued into this year.

Now, the council has said in an update that Wellington Street has reopened to all traffic after repairs were completed.

However, Waterloo Street will remain closed until September due to "severe corrosion delays".

The council apologised to motorists for the inconvenience and said it understands their "frustration".

In a social media post from the council, a major crack can be seen on the bridge.

The council explained the delay, saying: "This once in a generation major refurbishment project has taken longer than we estimated because the bridges were found to be in a very poor state when work started.

"The internal metal structures were found to be badly corroded and required more repairs than we anticipated.

"Once complete, this investment will provide safe and convenient routes for several decades."
