The road closures that will be caused due to the Tour of Britain Women cycling event on Sunday (June 9) have been confirmed.

This weekend, world’s top female cyclists will be cycling through Oldham as Greater Manchester hosts the fourth and final stage of the event.

It comes after the men's Tour of Britain returned to the borough for the first time in four years back in September last year.

Now, the women will take on the challenging terrain of the borough, with racers set to travel through Failsworth before officially starting the stage on Ashton Road at 11.15am.

They will then cycle down the Oldham Way, Lees Road, up to Lydgate, through Uppermill and Delph, up the gruelling Grains Road, down into Shaw, and then out to Rochdale.

Roads will need to be cleared for the cyclists to ride down, and Oldham Council has warned motorists that cars will be removed if they are left on roads which are part of the route.

The council has said rolling roadblocks will be in place during the race and certain sections of the route will need to be free of both driven and parked vehicles on the day.

On these roads, yellow “no waiting at any time” cones, similar to those used during the Saddleworth Band Contest, will be deployed the night before the race.

The council said that residents and businesses affected by the race will be directly contacted.

A spokesperson for Oldham Council said:  "We are thrilled to welcome the Tour of Britain Women 2024 for the first time and be part of one of the nation’s biggest free-to-attend sporting events.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the beauty of our town to a global audience, and we look forward to the energy and excitement that the race will undoubtedly bring to residents, visitors, businesses and all those taking part."

Cycling-themed events will be taking place across the borough and businesses on the route are being encouraged to decorate their premises or offer special items or discounts.

There is also a council-run competition where residents or businesses who decorate either their home or business could be in with a chance of winning £100.

Spectators are encouraged to join the action by watching for free from the roadside or watch live flag-to-flag live TV coverage of the stage.

The race will also be live-streamed on the British Cycling YouTube channels.
