The month of May has seen many Oldham men appear before the courts to be sentenced for horrific crimes.

The Oldham Times has selected three of the worst cases to be sentenced this month.

From a murderer to a predator to a young gang member, here are some Oldham men who have been put behind bars this month.

Man murdered father after drunken argument

A man responsible for the 'brutal' murder of a father while the pair walked back from an Oldham pub has been handed a life sentence.

On the walk home from the Manor Inn pub on Abbey Hills Road back in November last year, an argument ended with Burns, 38, murdering Mr McDonagh by stamping on his head.

Following a two-week trial, a jury found Burns guilty and he was sentenced to with a minimum of 20 years and 164 days at Manchester Crown Court on May 22.

When passing sentence, Judge Alan Conrad KC labelled Burns a "devious and manipulative man" and described his defence as "bogus".

Predator jailed and banned from trams

A vile predator sexually assaulted a woman and a teenage girl on a Metrolink tram.

Tahir Ali, of Kelverlow Street, Oldham, assaulted his first victim on November 14 last year before committing the second sexual assault, also on a city centre tram, on December 22.

The 37-year-old intentionally touched the two victims in a sexual manner on trams in the city centre despite being challenged. He was eventually identified through CCTV footage.

After being found guilty, Ali was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on May 10, to three years in prison.

He was also given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will ban him from any Metrolink tram, platform or car park.

Oldham teenager took part in gang robbery

A teenager from Oldham has been jailed for his role in an incident which saw a young man ordered into the boot of a car at knife-point.

Zayn Hamid, of Park Road, Oldham, was part of a group which forced the victim into the boot in Bury before he was driven to the Halo monument in Haslingden, Lancashire on August 11 last year.
