Councillor says wearing Nazi symbols was 'bad choice'

A photograph of Independent Cllr Marc Hince posing for a picture dressed as a "German officer" has circulated online, after he voted in favour of a Labour-run administration.

He described this as part of a "campaign of harassment and trolling".

The image depicts the councillor posing in what appears to be an army uniform with Nazi emblems on it.

The Shaw ward member issued the following statement: “The picture circulating on social media relates to a Yanks Weekend in Saddleworth - a WW2 re-enactment weekend - over a decade ago, long before I was an elected councillor.

“I attended at the time with a friend who regularly partakes in re-enactments and the event had representatives of both allied and axis forces.

“I suppose on reflection this was a bad choice. But obviously it was not meant to offend, the costume was worn in an appropriate context and does not in anyway shape or form represent my political views."

He continued: “Although I apologise if this has caused any offence. It is clear to me that this part of a campaign of harassment and trolling, which has resulted in death threats to me and members of my family.

“This campaign however, will not deter me from continuing to do the right thing for the people of Shaw."

Oldham Council has told The Oldham Times that it is "aware" of the picture, which appears to have as many as three swastikas on the jacket along with an iron cross - military decorations used by the Nazis.

A spokesperson for the authority said: "We are aware of a photograph of a sitting councillor circulating online. We expect all councillors to operate at the highest standard of public service in office."
