A man has died and another is fighting for his life after a horror crash in Oldham.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorbike and a pedestrian on Ripponden Road, in Sholver, at around 4pm yesterday.

A man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene, while a man in his 20s was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 4pm on May 18, we were called to a road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a pedestrian on Ripponden Road, Oldham.

"Upon arriving at the scene alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) and North West Ambulance Service, we found two men in critical condition.

"Sadly, a man in his 70s was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, who is in his 20s, has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries."

Officers yesterday urged the public to avoid the area while investigations are ongoing, as there were significant road closures in place.

A spokesperson for GMFRS added: “At just before 5pm yesterday (May 18), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Ripponden Road, Oldham.

“One fire engine from Oldham quickly attended the incident which involved a motorcycle.

“Crews arrived quickly at scene where a man had sadly died. Crews worked with North West Ambulance Service to convey another man to hospital and worked with Greater Manchester Police to make the vehicle and the area safe."

They continued: “The thoughts of everyone at GMFRS are with the family and friends of the man who lost his life.

“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately 45 minutes.”
