Firefighters in Oldham tackled a large industrial blaze at a commercial property for four hours.

Shortly before 9.30pm last night, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) were called to reports of a blaze at a premises on Albert Street, in Failsworth.

While no injuries were reported, fire crews instructed nearby residents to keep their windows closed as they extinguished the blaze of industrial waste.

One of the firefighters who attended the incident said: "We had a large quantity of industrial waste on fire in Failsworth on Albert Street.

"Crews were there for four hours, it was just a matter of getting water on it.

"It was just a large pile of industrial waste - household waste that's built up."

They continued: "If you get a skip and it goes to a yard we would class it as a industrial waste.

"There was a large plume of smoke, residents had to be warned to keep their windows shut."

Four fire engines, as well as a turntable ladder, were on the scene - as were Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At around 9.20pm last night (May 18), fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a commercial property on Albert Street, Failsworth.

“Four engines from Hollins, Chadderton, Ashton, Oldham and the aerial appliance from Manchester Central and drone unit quickly attended the scene.

“Fire fighters extinguished the fire using four handheld jets and utilised the aerial ladder jet."

They added: “Crews were at scene for approximately three hours and ten minutes.”

GMP has been contacted for comment.
