A serial thief who shoplifted and stole a bike in Oldham has been jailed.

Robert Degnan committed five separate shoplifting offences over a two-month period at the end of last year, before committing the bike theft in February this year.

On October 31, the 40-year-old stole seven vacuum cleaners from a B&M shop in Oldham, which were worth a total value of £353.

A week later, on November 7, Degnan stole a 32-inch Sharp television from the Tesco Superstore in Failsworth, which was worth £189.

He also stole £54 worth of washing up tablets from the Aldi shop in Failsworth that day.

Degnan, of Broadway Street, Oldham, was arrested for those thefts and pleaded guilty to them both the following day.

However, just a few weeks later, Degnan once again stole from a shop, this time stealing two Philips electric shavers from a Boots shop in Oldham, worth £179.98, on December 17.

Just two days later, he stole two shavers worth the same price again from Boots.

On February 18, Degnan went equipped for theft, carrying with him pliers, a chisel, bolt cutters and a wrench, which he planned to use for theft and did use to steal a bike.

At Tameside Magistrates' Court on April 30, Degnan was sentenced for five counts of theft, one count of going equipped for theft and one count of theft of a pedal cycle, all of which he had pleaded guilty to.

In total, Degnan received 10 weeks in prison for his offending.
