Neighbours in Royton and Crompton say they received a flyer through their doors warning them of an alleged 'landfill application' near their homes.

On Sunday (March 3) a resident in the area said a flyer was posted through his door encouraging neighbours to object to a landfill application.

While the letter claims Crompton and Royton Golf Club on High Barn Street is planning to open the landfill site, "adjacent to our homes", Oldham Council said it has not received any such planning application.

The board of directors at the golf club also quashed the concerns, calling it a "baseless rumour" and "slanderous".

The letter reads: "If [the club] gets approval, there will be up to 50 huge wagons a day dumping all sorts... For years.

"Then there will be a driving range open to the public that will be open day and night.

"They will then do more landfill on the course.

"This will cause even more disruption, traffic, chaos, noise, pollution, mess and environmental issues to our local area.

"Not to mention all the machinery and workmen moving the waste on site each day."

The flyer, which was posted anonymously, continued: "We cannot let this happen. It will affect our families, our health and the value of our homes.

"This will be an environmental travesty.

"We need to work together and stop this landfill happening.

"Act now before it's too late."

Several contact details of local councillors as well as the owners of the golf club were then included in the letter.

In a post on social media, Conservative councillors Dave Arnott, Lewis Quigg and Christine Adams all said they had been made aware of the letter that was posted through letterboxes in Royton.

Cllr Arnott also told The Oldham Times: "I have been made aware of a leaflet that has been delivered to homes in the area around Crompton and Royton Golf Club.

"I have approached officers of the club for more information on any plans that they may be considering.”

Crompton and Royton Golf Club Ltd also issued a statement in response to the claims.

The board of directors said: "Thank you for bringing to our attention the slanderous leaflet currently in circulation.

"I wish to confirm that Crompton and Royton Golf Club have no intentions to establish a landfill site.

"Any plans for land engineering aimed at enhancing the golf course and drainage will undergo thorough scrutiny and require planning approval.

"These proposals will be duly documented and submitted to OMBC (Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council) at the appropriate juncture.

"Should these baseless rumours persist, we will have no choice but to seek legal recourse."
