The response to a report of a suspicious package was one of a number of emergencies to appear in the first episode of this series of BBC One's Ambulance.

The twelfth series of the show tracks the work of North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) as its teams respond to a number of incidents across the region.

On Wednesday, it showed a pair of paramedics come back off a break to be told there is a report of an "unexploded bomb" off Henshaw Street, as reported by The Oldham Times at the time on March 22 last year. This report of an "unexploded bomb" suggests there is an item wrapped in a blanket with wires coming out of it.

They arrive at the scene alongside their colleagues from the other emergency services as well as another paramedic, Matt, who is one of the commanders in control of the scene. He reveals his daughter might be among the children from Bluecoat School who are on a field the other side of Henshaw Street in need of evacuation.

Matt says: "I think we need to get Bluecoat School off the field.

"There are kids there and my daughter might be one of them so let us get the kids out of the way."

Explosive Ordnance Disposal takes time to arrive at the scene because it is at another incident in Astley Bridge.

When the team arrives at the scene, it turns out the suspicious package is a firework and is a lot smaller than suspected.

Matt says: "There are incidents which turn on a 10 pence piece and what you thought was a safe area to work in becomes an unsafe area to work in. We have sister services who have skills as well and it is about working together with them to get the best outcome.

"Sometimes the public see this as us standing around but we are keeping an awful lot of people safe."
