A pub in the town centre became the latest in a line of premises to close its doors in Oldham.

The Buck and Union announced its closure in a post on social media on Friday (February 2).

The pub on Union Street said the reason was a combination of 2020s coronavirus crisis and the current cost of living crisis.

It is the latest in a line of premises to close its doors, including the Royal Oak on the same street at the end of last year, although the Royal Oak could be saved after it became an Asset of Community Value.

The post on social media said: "Yes, it's true, The Buck and Union has closed. The pandemic in 2020 started a change in people using pubs and soaring prices, plus rent and other bills, didn't help us either.

"We kept going as long as we could, searching for other ways to keep it open, but this week an awful decision was made to close the pub."

The post on social media prompted a number of responses from its regulars and other premises such as Clean Plate Kitchen.

The cafe around the corner from The Buck and Union said they were 'lovely neighbours'.

Their post on social media said: "This is really sad news, our lovely neighbours at Buck and Union have closed their doors for the final time.

"Wishing them all the luck in the world on their new journeys. Ally and his team will be sadly missed by so many in the town centre community."
