A canal boat record shop which sank after travelling through Oldham has celebrated re-opening.
Rubber Ducky Records filled with water in the space of 90 seconds after its propellor hit a ‘rug or mattress’ near Failsworth last spring.
In April, shop owner Myles Greenwood said around 1,000 records were damaged as a result of the incident, with water up to his ankles.
Turntables, amplifiers, and electronics were also damaged during the doomed trip to Manchester from Hebden Bridge.
Following the damage, Myles has raised more than £10,000 in a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign to restore the boat – with the shop needing a full refit, new engine, new stock, and new equipment.
The shop owner said the Failsworth portion of the canal was one of the dirtier areas, echoing concerns shared by boater Daniel Farnworth, who said he would not attempt to navigate the canal again.
Those looking to make the journey now are out of luck, with the Oldham portion of the Rochdale Canal currently closed to boaters due to ‘substantial subsidence’ at a Failsworth lock.
