Hundreds of residents gathered around Limeside's Christmas tree over the weekend to commemorate a significant milestone in the ward's history.

On Sunday (December 10), more than 400 people and 180 children united in a joyous celebration for Limeside's first-ever Christmas lights switch-on.

Organised by the Holy Roman Catholic Church on Roman Road and Hollinwood ward councillors, Kamran Ghafoor, Abdul Wahid and Muhhamad Irfan, who said they were "delighted" to arrange the special occasion and see the community come together in festive spirit.

The festivities also included a Christmas grotto, face painting and craft stalls - all completely free for residents - as well as a fire engine tour for the children and performances from a local school choir.

Stalls, food and fairground rides were also on offer.

The success of the day prompted organisers and councillors to commit to the annual event year after year - and promising an "even more enchanting experience" in the future.

Councillor Ghafoor added: "The essence of Christmas is about bringing joy to every corner of our community.

"We were thrilled to witness the smiles on the faces of the children and families who joined us for this special occasion."

The inaugural Christmas lights switch-on has not only brightened the church but has "illuminated the spirit of unity and goodwill within the heart of Limesid", the Cllr added.

The councillors also said they extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
