Oldham hero Kevin Sinfield has completed his ultramarathon challenge in aid of motor neurone disease (MND), which has so far raised more than £600,000.
The 43-year-old rugby legend and fundraising extraordinaire was cheered to the finish line as he ran up The Mall in London in the rain today (Thursday, December 7), completing seven ultra marathons in as many days in seven cities around Britain and Ireland.
Sinfield, the current England rugby union defence coach, completed the gruelling runs in Leeds, Cardiff, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Dublin and Brighton before finishing in front of scores of applauding supporters in the capital.
He hugged his teammates at the finish line and was thronged by members of the press and supporters.
He was inspired by former Leeds team-mate Rob Burrow to take on the “seven in seven in seven” challenge.
Each 27-mile run added an extra mile at the end to encourage others to help their friends through tough times.
The former Leeds Rhino player has undertaken several other physical challenges over the last few years, raising £8m since 2020.
Sinfield took on seven back-to-back ultramarathons last year as well, which saw him running through Oldham on the last day.
When announcing the challenge on BBC Breakfast last month, Sinfield said: "If we want to make a dent on MND and to shift the dial line we need money and the awareness has been brilliant over the last four years."
The final leg today saw Sinfield set off from Twickenham stadium before heading through Richmond Park for the extra mile before finishing in central London past Westminster and Trafalgar Square then onto the Mall at around 4pm.
The target fundraising number if £777,777 in honour of Burrow, who wore number seven during his playing days.
