The leaves are turning and the clocks are going back – autumn is officially here and there’s a host of firework and Bonfire Night events taking place in Oldham.
This year Guy Fawkes Night falls on Sunday, November 5 but there are numerous events happening in the borough in the week running up to the occasion.
Oldham council is running its own event – an exception in Greater Manchester – and there are a range of independent events being held at locations including farms and cricket clubs.
Bonfire Night is celebrated every year in commemoration of the failed gunpowder plot which sought to blow up the House of Lords and King James I in 1605.
The plot was famously initiated by Guy Fawkes, which is why some people refer to the holiday as Guy Fawkes Night.
Here is a breakdown of confirmed displays taking place across Oldham.
Oldham Edge Playing Fields
Oldham council is hosting its Big Bang Bonfire on Thursday, November 2 from 5pm with fireworks being set off from 7pm.
There will be fairground and food stalls, bonfire lighting, a fire show, live music and topped off with the fireworks display.
One lucky child is also being given the chance to push the button to start the fireworks display, with Oldham council running a competition on its website – with submissions closing on Sunday, October 29. A winner will be randomly selected on Monday, October 30.
