Oldham's acting career has taken another step forward as the borough features in an episode of the Sky series Brassic.

The Abbey Hills Road location features in Series 5, Episode 4, as a fight breaks out over money.

Michelle Keegan’s Erin Croft features in the scene, which was filmed at a property on Abbey Hills Road, for the episode that aired on Sky Max on Thursday, October 19.

Now one Oldhamer has recalled how he witnessed the filming – but hadn’t realised what it was until he recognised the location while watching the series.

Coldhurst resident Bryan Yates was travelling down Abbey Hills Road on his way to work in Stalybridge about a year-and-a-half ago when he saw vans and lighting outside the block of flats.

Thinking at first it might be a news crew, Bryan realised it must be something else when he saw the crews still there on the way back home later that day – along with a catering van.

Bryan said: “I never put two and two together until a few weeks back when I was watching it. I was just sat there one day, me and my girlfriend were watching it, and I thought ‘Oh, that’s Abbey Hills in the background’.

“It’s portrayed as being a seaside resort with a sea view, but it’s one of the flats on Abbey Hills Road that they use for the outside scenes, which is quite funny to be honest.

“When they’re in the flat she opens the curtains and there’s this big promenade with sea and a pier.

“But then, when they go out of the front door it’s the flat with a balcony next to Ralph’s Carpets on Abbey Hills Road.

“When you look at things more and more, I just see how many other places they use around the borough.”

Bryan says he’s seen Stamford Street and Dukinfield Crematorium also appear in the currently airing series, and called the filming "a little ray of sunshine in Oldham compared to everything else that’s going on".

Earlier this month the British Comedy Guide reported that production is already underway on the sixth series of the show.

Last month film crews were spotted stationed at the Prince Street Car Park next to Oldham Mumps tram stop, and an Oldham petrol station was left ‘starstruck’ after it was used as a filming location.

The new series is expected to air in 2024, with series five currently airing on Sky Max on Thursday nights.

The series has previously filmed in locations across Greater Manchester, including Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester city centre.

Oldham Council offers film locations on its website, including the Saddleworth moors, town centre, and parts of the Peak District.

Filming request forms and requests for road closures can be made in advance of filming.
