From late-night parties to visitors knocking on neighbours' doors, residents on a 'tranquil' road in Oldham have blasted the arrival of a converted garage into an Airbnb holiday lodge.

A home garage on Ferney Field Road which has been converted into a holiday lodge is at the heart of fierce criticism by residents on the street.

A change of use application was submitted to Oldham Council in September which details converting the single-storey block into an open-plan lounge, kitchenette and bedroom.

There is also a separate bathroom with a toilet, shower and sink.

While Oldham Council is yet to give its verdict on the proposal, guests can book a room at The Lodge on Airbnb for around £71 to £87 per night.

However, at least four neighbours have criticised the plans and written their formal objections to the council ahead of its decision.

One "particularly vulnerable" elderly resident who requires care wrote Chadderton is "known for being quiet and restful" yet neighbours have been disturbed by visitors looking for The Lodge, "which as anyone can see is just a converted garage", they added.

They continued: "Had the proposal been dealt with according to the requirements then concerns of this nature could have been taken into account.

"As it stands, it would seem that we just have to put up with it, which I find unacceptable."

Another neighbour also claimed the street has seen a spike in anti-social behaviour since The Lodge opened its doors to guests.

The objector said the rural field facing the property, which is referred to on booking websites as a "selling point", is "often littered with alcohol bottles and cans, always following there being 'residents' in the holiday let".

A third person claimed there has been a "number of incidents" around The Lodge around noise.

They further allege "at least three occasions" where guests have knocked on neighbours' homes in the "early hours looking for 'the garage'".

Parking is proving to be another prevailing issue for neighbours.

A resident said parking is already a "real issue" in the area but has become "markedly worse when 'holiday makers' have stayed".The Oldham Times: The kitchen and dining areaThe kitchen and dining area (Image: Airbnb)

Speaking on behalf of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, one objector described Ferney Field Road as a "unique, beautiful, tranquil oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area".

They continued: "We strongly believe a holiday let is very much out of character.

"There are many elderly residents living here and we all enjoy the small but strong community spirit.

"These are the reasons we moved here.

"It is not a holiday resort and a holiday let makes no sense to us whatsoever."

The objector similarly raised the parking issue, pointing out that the "single track road" is forcing visitors to take up "residents' usual premium parking spaces" while the 20mph speed limit "tends to be ignored by visitors who are unfamiliar with the area".

They concluded: "My wife and I have lived here for 13 years without any serious negative incidents.

"The neighbourhood has enjoyed a peaceful, calm existence - up until the last six months."

When contacted by The Oldham Times, The Lodge did not respond to calls.
