Plans to build five new houses in Oldham have been approved despite the concerns of nearby residents.

A proposal was initially submitted in November 2021 to build the units on land to the south of Nether Hey Street, an unadopted residential street in Glodwick.

The plans look to develop previously used land which is now vacant by building the five four-bedroom houses, with some residents saying it would address the need for housing in Oldham.

However, some other residents objected to the plans, raising concerns over access, parking and the impact on the road.

According to the planning, design and access statement prepared by Chorlton Planning Ltd, each of the five houses will have three floors, with a lounge, dining kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor, three bedrooms including one en-suite on the first floor and a large, en-suite bedroom on the second floor.

Each house would face the homes on Nether Hey Street and have a garden area to the front and rear areas along with a car parking space.

According to an application report prepared by planning case officer Matthew Taylor, the design and layout of the homes are deemed to be in keeping with the area and the homes would not be "overly oppressive" or lead to a loss of light for neighbours.

Roughly a dozen residents from the area commented on the proposed plans, with some criticising the scheme while others offered their support for the new homes.

Residents who objected to the proposal were mainly concerned over parking and access, with both Nuttall Street and Nether Hey Street, where the site can be accessed from, being narrow streets where residents park.

Those who commented felt it would be made more difficult for cars and pedestrians to enter and exit the estate and that parking was already limited.

Nether Hey Street is an unadopted road, meaning it is not maintained by the highway authority and that residents of the road are responsible for its maintenance.

Some residents felt the development of the new houses would cause damage to the unadopted road, with repairs then having to be covered by them.

However, several residents expressed their support for the proposal, pointing to the fact the homes would bring a vacant plot of land back into use and would address the borough's need for housing.

The application was formally approved on Tuesday (September 19).
