New pictures have been released showing construction works at an Aldi store set to open in Oldham later this year.
Last October an application to build a new foodstore, along with car parking, and an internal road at land at Broadway Green Business Park in Chadderton, as well as a ‘flexible use’ commercial unit, was approved by Oldham’s planning committee.
The supermarket had previously applied to the council to build a new hub at the land off Lydia Becker Way, but it was rejected earlier that year after councillors said they wanted to hold out for ‘high quality’ jobs on the site.
Aldi’s spokesperson said the site had been marketed ‘extensively’ for industrial purposes since 2013, without success, and a food store was an ‘ideal solution’.
Last month detailed plans for a drive-thru Costa cafe next to the new store were lodged and a decision on the application is expected by the end of this month.
Works on the 1,315 sqm Aldi store, which will include an additional warehouse and office facilities, started earlier this year.
It is expected that the new store will create 40 to 50 full and part-time jobs.
Stuart Parks, Real Estate director at Aldi UK, said: “We are excited to bring an Aldi store to Broadway Green to provide Oldham residents with even better access to high-quality products at the lowest prices, and we look forward to opening our doors to customers later this year.”
Oldham Council leader Cllr Arooj Shah recently joined members from the Aldi team for a tour of the site.
She said: "It's great to see more businesses choosing to invest in Oldham; boosting our economy, adding to the choice of retail options here, and creating new jobs for local people.
"I was really pleased to see the build of the new store progressing so quickly and look forward to seeing it open its doors later this year."
Broadway Green, which is located two miles from Oldham town centre, is being developed in partnership with Oldham Council, Seddon, and Grasscroft Property.
The site includes 600,000 sq ft of employment space that is set to create up to 2,000 new jobs and up to 500 new homes. The scheme will also include a new park.
