An Oldham school is "thrilled" with the “levels of success” achieved by its GCSE students.

Students at the Blue Coat School are celebrating today after over a third of all GCSE grades awarded were grade 7 or above.

Meanwhile 85 per cent of the year group achieved a grade 4 or above in English and Maths, and over 60 per cent of the cohort achieved the EBAcc qualification.

Students Kathryn Richmond and Phillipa Knight were both awarded 10 grade 9’s, Jessica Perrin and Jacob Rigney both picked up 8 grade 9’s and 3 grade 8’s and Alexandra Clark was awarded 5 grade 9’s and 6 grade 8’s.

Kathryn and Jacob are continuing to pursue their dreams of entering the medical profession and will be staying on at Blue Coat Sixth to study A Levels in Biology and Chemistry.

Kathryn has the ambition to one day study at New College Oxford and become a surgeon, whilst Jacob has his sights set on the field of diagnostic oncology.

Over the summer Kathryn has been gaining work experience in both ENT and Orthopaedic surgery, and Jacob has been doing volunteer work at Oldham Royal hospital.

Headteacher Rob Higgins said: “Once again we are absolutely thrilled and delighted with the levels of success that our young people have achieved.

“They have worked incredibly hard for these results and it’s pleasing and reassuring to see that their hard work has been rewarded.

“You can’t forget and underestimate what significant disruption this cohort of students faced to their education – lockdown hit as they were halfway through Year 8 and much of their Year 9 was disrupted with having to repeatedly isolate.

“Key Stage 3 is the building block and foundation for future success and to achieve such amazing results despite these challenges shows just how hard they have worked and how well they have been supported by staff at the school and their families. Seeing students, their families and staff celebrating the results today has been fantastic.

“I would like to thank all the staff at the school and the families of all our young people for the care, reassurance, guidance and support that they have provided for them, which has enabled them to achieve such a wonderful set of examination results.

“We are incredibly proud of every single one of our students and wish them the best of luck for the future.”
