A man has been taken to hospital after a car caught fire in Oldham yesterday.

At approximately 1.45pm yesterday (August 8), emergency services received reports of a car on fire on Buckstones Road in Shaw.

A fire engine and firefighters from Oldham attended the scene where they used a hose reel, thermal imaging camera and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.

The crew also assessed a man who was then taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was also in attendance to support other emergency services. 

Dramatic footage of the incident shows a black Vauxhall car had become engulfed in the fire.

Black plumes of smoke filled the air while traffic, including a passing bus, steered clear.

The driver's door was also seen wide open and fully alight with flames.

The part of the road on the driver's side was also on fire next to the car.

At one point, the Vauxhall lets out a small bang as flames fly out of the windows for a split second.

In a statement about the incident, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to a vehicle fire on Buckstones Road in Oldham.

"One fire engine from Oldham quickly attended the scene.

"The fire involved a car on the roadway.

“A man was assessed by fire crews before being transferred to the care of colleagues from NWAS and conveyed to hospital.

"Firefighters used a hose reel, thermal imaging camera and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.

"Fire crews were in attendance for approximately 45 minutes.”

The North West Ambulance Service has also been approached for comment.
