Oldham Council has started installing a new play area at Daisy Nook Country Park.

The equipment is set to replace the removed play boat which was closed off just over a year ago.

The play area was closed off to the public on July 21, 2022, after Oldham Council said the wood had become too damaged for youngsters to play on.

At the time, Oldham Council said the removal was necessary because “years of play have taken a toll and the wood is damaged”.

Now, replacement play equipment is being installed.

The council says it hopes the new equipment, which includes a climbing frame, will be ready to use during the summer holidays this year.

On Facebook, one resident, James Cook, joked that the council should ‘sort some suitable weather so kids can actually enjoy this outdoor space’.

Rain has been battering much of the country over the last few weeks, with many wondering if the sun will ever return.

August looks to remain wet until later in the month, with the Met Office’s long-range forecast expecting showery conditions.

News of the replacement play equipment will be welcome news to Oldhamers who used the old play boat.

Facebook commenter Joanne Penman said that the equipment was ‘what we’ve all been asking for’.

Others criticised the council.

Commenter Sally Hopkins said: “Great news – but as most schools are already into the 2nd week of the holidays and this looks nowhere near finished, it doesn't bode well for the summer holidays. Better planning needed I think.”

Commenter Sarah Green called for an upgrade to paths throughout the rest of the park, saying it needed upkeep.

An Oldham Council spokesperson said they would update The Oldham Times on a confirmed opening date for the equipment.
