Oldham Council is offering residents the chance to win one of three £50 gift vouchers for a local business or restaurant by completing a survey.

The council is currently carrying out a boroughwide audit of all active travel facilities in a 2km area around every primary and secondary school.

Active travel includes walking, cycling, and wheeling (such as with a wheelchair) to get around, as opposed to driving or taking public transport.

Oldham Council says it wants schools, teachers, parents, residents and business owners, to tell it how it can make active travel to schools safer and more accessible.

The results of the survey, which is open until August 15, will help the council come up with a priority list of improvement schemes.

Winners will be selected at random on Friday, August 18, and will be notified via email or phone.

One scheme already in place is a ‘school street’ outside St Anne’s CE Primary School in Royton.

Motor vehicle access to the road outside the school is restricted at pick-up and drop-off times.

Parents and residents have been supportive of the changes, though there was initially some confusion about the changes from some.

The survey, which can be completed online, also aims to identify barriers and obstacles people face that stop them from travelling actively.

Oldham has the lowest cycling rate in Greater Manchester and the sixth lowest in England, according to Department for Transport figures released last year.

Cllr Arooj Shah, leader of Oldham Council, said: “The council wants to cut the number of vehicles being used on the school run and get people more active.

“If we can do that then we’ll be cutting pollution and congestion and making our roads safer.

“We have facts and figures from our own surveys but now we want to hear your views. They are important and will help form the future of active travel in the borough.”

Those who want to be in for a chance to win a voucher must enter their details at the end of the survey.
