Thunder and flood warnings are in place as Oldham is set for more hot temperatures.
A heat-health alert is also in place, with the UK Health Security Agency warning of a likely increase in mortality for those aged over 65 or with health conditions.
A yellow thunderstorm warning is in place from 12 noon until 9pm today (Monday, June 12) across much of the country, including Oldham, Cardiff, much of London, and Inverness.
Last year, UK temperatures rose above 40°C for the first time, with a record 40.3°C set in Coningby, Lincolnshire and reaching 36°C in Oldham, leading to bin collections paused and tram services suspended due to heat on the overhead lines.

Since then, The UK Health Security Agency and Met Office have launched a ‘heat-health alerts’ system to warn people of hot weather. Oldham, and the entire North West, are currently subject to a ‘yellow’ heat-health alert, in place from Friday, June 9, to Tuesday, June 13.
According to the UKHSA, the North West could see ‘significant impacts’ across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures, including a ‘likely’ increase in mortality across the population, particularly those aged over 65 or with health conditions.
In other parts of the country, including the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, and East of England, an amber heat alert is in place.
In Oldham, the Met Office and Environment Agency have warned that ‘flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds’, issuing a ‘low risk’ flood alert, meaning that “It’s possible that runoff from rainfall or blocked drains will cause properties and roads to flood”.

The weather agency has also warned to expect power cuts, lightning strikes, and road closures – warning of a danger to life if fast-flowing or deep floodwater occurs.
Here is the weather forecast, from the Met Office.
