An Oldham MP has written to a telecommunications company to urge it to address residents' concerns as 40ft masts crop up across the borough.

Residents across Oldham have voiced their frustrations as IX Wireless masts have already been installed on a number of residential streets with plans to erect more in areas like Royton, Shaw and Chadderton.

While the telecoms company has sent letters to many affected residents in the borough, Oldhamers are less than happy with the plans and complain about them for a variety of reasons.

Many consider the mast will block the view from their homes, devalue the value of their properties and potentially emit noise.

In April this year, dozens gathered at Royton Band Club on Sandy Lane to express their concerns to local councillors.

Now, Jim McMahon, the MP for Oldham West and Royton, has published a letter to IX Wireless to invite the company and members of the public affected by the developments to discuss the concerns.

Should the company accept the invitation to the proposed workshop, residents will be invited to share their concerns directly with the company and the MP.

It is hoped the meeting will be a constructive dialogue about the issues that have arisen from the installation of the masts, such as their location and visual appearance.

Mr McMahon's letter asks the company to provide "greater clarity on future planning decisions" and cites the "clear impact" the masts are having on the day-to-day lives of residents' properties and businesses.

He continued: "We welcome the vital investment in infrastructure within communities.

"However, I understand from residents and respective meetings that have been held that this has been to the detriment of the community who have expressed clear complaints about the lack of consultation beforehand for their respective and future placements.

"Moving forward, IX Wireless and Oldham Council must work together effectively to maintain a dialogue to ensure the best outcome for residents", the letter added.

The MP also said in his letter that "it must be acknowledged" that the masts "have seriously detracted from the character and enjoyment of local communities, where it is believed there are alternatives which could and still should be explored".

He hopes the workshop would provide maps and site-by-site photos for those affected to converse and seek changes where possible.

The MP added: “Consultation and community engagement is critical for these types of development.

"I welcome all vital infrastructure in Oldham to ensure that residents remain connected.

"However, there has been an ongoing lack of communication that needs to be addressed regarding the placement of masts.

"Residents must be able to continue to feel pride within our community."

Mr McMahon’s office have stated that members of the public wishing to attend the workshop and have been directly affected can do so by emailing his office at jim.mcmahon.mp@parliament.uk
