An Oldham runner has continued his winning streak after coming first at the London Mini Marathon.
Evan Grime, 14, from Royton, who runs for the Salford Harriers and Trafford Athletic Club, took the under-15 boys’ title after completing the race in just seven minutes and 39 seconds.
The Year 9 pupil at the Blue Coat School, who competes at 800 metres and 1500 metres, was representing the North West and has qualified for the England team.
The London Mini Marathon saw under 18 runners from regions across the country take on the last 2.6km of the London Marathon the day before the main race.
Evan’s mum Jill Grime said that she imagines Evan will one day compete at the Olympics but that it is too early to say.
She added that her son “loves” running and competing and has been “around it all his life.”
The 14-year-old is couched by his dad Ian Grime, 52, who has competed for both England and Great Britain at 1,500m and 3,000m.
Evan’s sister Erin also ran for Salford Harriers and Trafford Athletic Club and is currently studying at Loughborough University.
The whole family took the trip to London last month to cheer him on.
Jill said: “We watched him go past Buckingham Palace and we knew he was running really well but didn’t know where he would finish.
“We knew he was in the top three but didn't know he had won until about five minutes after the race when we got to the finish.”
Evan has competed at the London Mini Marathon twice before, but this year is the first time he has won.
Jill said: “He came second the first time he did and the second time he came third, so he has always been in the top three but was very pleased to win and very determined to win. We’re very proud of him.”
Evan’s Mini Marathon triumph comes after he won the Schools International Athletic Board (SIAB) Cross Country junior boys race in March, beating other pupils from England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland in the 4.1km race.
