A parking row has erupted in Oldham after a “threatening” note was left on a car in Royton leaving the driver “shaken”.

A photograph of the note, reportedly left on a car parked on Radcliffe Street, was posted anonymously on the Royton Community Hub Facebook page on Saturday afternoon.

The note reads: “Tin opener available at 81 or 83. Next time you need to leave your car for more than a couple of hours, pay for a car park and refrain from taking valuable parking spaces outside my home!!

"Next time the can opener may not be so forthcoming."

In response to the note, the poster wrote: “Disappointed to share this was found on my mother-in-law’s car today on Radcliffe Street.

“This person has no idea of the circumstances around the reason for parking there, however this is irrelevant as the road is not owned by either of these properties.

“She is fairly shaken and now is worried about where to park when this was perfectly legal and reasonable.

“If anyone has suffered any criminal damage this may enlighten them as to where it’s come from, obviously cannot be sure.

“Please ensure you move to a house with a parking space if you need to park close to your home, and refrain from writing threatening letters.”

The note and response have triggered more than 30 comments from fellow Facebook users with several urging the driver who found the note to report it to the police.

Referring to the note one user wrote: “I'd share it with the police.”

Another said: “Wow that's awful. I’d be reporting it to the police anyway.

“Pay your road tax, park on a public road…some people are just horrible.”

Agreeing a third said: “I would report this to the police, it’s threatening behaviour.”

Others called the note “disgusting” and “pure evil.”

One user wrote: “Disgusting this is a public road. This nasty person does not have the right to stop someone parking outside their house. It's not their personal parking space. The threat is terrible she knows where she parked, she should report it to the police.”

Another said: “That is pure evil. They don't own the road selfish people.!

According to the RAC, it is legal to park outside someone’s house, unless the vehicle is blocking a driveway or a wheel is over a dropped kerb.

Other situations in which parking is not permitted include streets governed by residents’ parking permits.
