Vandals have carried out an "appalling crime" after the Grade II listed structure next to St Chad's War Memorial in Uppermill was vandalised.

Oldham Council shared pictures on social media today (Monday, May 15) that showed the damage which had been done to the structure.

The pictures show the top of the pillar has been knocked off, sustaining major damage, along with damage to the base of the structure.

The council confirmed the incident has been reported to the police and they are appealing for anyone who may have information about the incident to get in touch with the police.

In a post on social media, the council said: "This mindless act of vandalism has taken place on the Grade 2 listed structure next to St Chad's War Memorial, Uppermill.

"The incident has been reported to the Police. We are looking into repairing the structure. We urge anyone with information to please call 101 to catch the culprits who did this appalling crime."

The council did not say when the vandalism took place.
