Local businessman, fundraiser and Oldham Athletic owner Frank Rothwell visited an Oldham college last week, where he toured the campus and spoke to students.
Rothwell was at Oldham Sixth Form College (OSFC) on Thursday, April 20, along with Stephen Lowe, former OSFC Chair of Governors and Project Manager of the Stoller Charitable Trust.
The visit included a tour of the college facilities and the opportunity to talk to staff and students about their day to day learning and lives.
Rothwell spoke to students about their studies, gaining an insight into the variety of pathways and qualifications on offer at OSFC.
He praised the hard-working students, who are preparing for upcoming exams, and the facilities available to learners across college.
Rothwell said: "I was really impressed, the college looks brand new and every student I saw and spoke to was really taking their studies seriously and enjoying their time at the college.
"I was impressed that there were options to add extra elements, like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and first aid, to their education.
"I believe that these extra qualifications set you up for life after sixth form and help put you at the top of the pile in job applications, because you have demonstrated you are prepared to go the extra mile. My visit absolutely exceeded my expectations."
Whilst visiting the Sports Centre, Rothwell was able to see Year 12 Sport students deliver coaching sessions for local primary school pupils from Higher Failsworth.
Associate Principal, Suzannah Reeves, said: "Our focus on transforming lives in our community is central to everything we do and we greatly welcomed the opportunity to showcase this to Frank, who has achieved so much within his own life.
"As a college, we take great pride in having a broad and inclusive curriculum that is supportive and supplemented by a whole host of extra opportunities, available to all students."
