An Uber driver who went out of his way to assist a customer has been praised.

On Thursday night (April 20) an Oldham mum wanted to get a message across to her son and was unable to contact him and decided to book a Uber driver for assistance.

A message on Oldham Neighbourhood read: “An appreciation post for a wonderful man.

“I had an urgent message to be delivered to my son in Oldham late yesterday evening as I was unable to get in touch with him. I couldn't get there myself so ordered an Uber to deliver the message for me (paid of course).

“Two separate Uber drivers refused and cancelled my rides, however this lovely man accepted and helped me out massively without any hesitation, he was so caring, kind and understanding and went out of his way to deliver my message. Thank you again Umar!

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

Umar Raza had only been working with Uber for three months and spoke to us from his home on Eid (Saturday April 22).

He said: “Somebody booked me for a job and she sent me a message to get to her son. “So, I found the lad and got the message across.

I said to the lady I am going to cancel the job because I don’t want to charge you for this. But she insisted on paying and still give me tip.”

It appeared her son's phone battery had died and there was no other way of getting an important message across.

Umar had been fasting throughout the day and had worked through Iftari after his final job. He was then on his way home to eat but he insisted on finishing the task.

Umar said: “She had booked Uber to just get a message across. Most of the Uber drivers were just cancelling the job. It is not really our job to get out of the car and knock on somebody’s door.”

Umar said he only found out about how much his simple gesture to take on the job meant to the other person when he started getting tagged into posts. He has been inundated with messages thanking him for his efforts to support someone in their hour of need. He added:

“Honestly, I was shocked seeing the message thanking me. I mean, I was just trying to be nice.

“The way I saw it was that I just imagined what if I was in trouble and I needed someone’s help. How would my mum feel. I just thought I needed to help her.”
