The crash brought Metrolink services to a standstill for more than an hour with no tram services operating between Derker and Freehold.
Manchester Metrolink said in a post on social media that the trams were suspended due to the car "blocking the tracks".
By 8am, the car had been removed from the scene.
According to one passenger on the tram, the police car had "hit the tram" but this has not been confirmed by police.
