A man has died at an address in Oldham after emergency services were called to reports of a house fire.

At approximately 5.20pm yesterday (Thursday), Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service were called out to a property on Sunfield Avenue following reports of a fire.

Upon arrival, the fire service has now confirmed it found no evidence of a fire but discovered a cooker had been left on, causing some smoke.

A statement by police said a man was found at the property unconscious and non-responsive.

It added that despite the efforts of emergency services and other people in the property, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A GMP spokesperson said: "GMP received a call at 5.22pm on Thursday 2 March 2023, to attend an address on Sunfield Avenue, Oldham, where a man was reported to be unconscious and non-responsive.

"Colleagues from GMFRS and NWAS also attended.

"Despite the best efforts of other individuals in the property, and NWAS, the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene." 

The force said it is believed there were no suspicious circumstances and the next of kin of the man are being informed.

At the time of the incident yesterday, GMFRS said: “At around 5.20pm on Thursday, 2 March, fire crews were called to reports of a fire at a home on Sunfield Avenue in Oldham.

"Three fire engines from Oldham, Hollins and Chadderton quickly attended the scene."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in an updated statement said: "We attended but there was no fire at the property.

"A cooker had just been left on, causing some smoke, which was turned off on arrival."
