Maintenance work is set to take place on the Oldham Way bridges at Wellington Street and Waterloo Street beginning early next month, Oldham Council has said.
Oldham Way is one of the busiest stretches of road in the borough and the council has said the work is needed to make sure the structures are fit for purpose so they can be used for years to come.
The works are due to begin on Monday, February 6 and are expected to be completed in the late autumn.
Oldham Way will remain open while the works are carried out, however the council has said lane closures will be taking place.
This will start on February 6 when traffic will be down to just one lane in both directions.
One major change will see east bound traffic on Oldham Way crossing over onto the west bound side between the on-slip Road to Emmott Way and return back on to the east bound carriageway after Waterloo Street.
This will be in place until the end of May, then the switch from west bound traffic over to east bound carriageway will take place from June until early November.
The council has said the works are being paid for by a £4.174m it has secured from the government.
All the dates are subject to change and advanced warning signage will be in place.
Pedestrian access will be maintained, with any changes signposted in advance.
The council said it apologises in advance for the inconvenience caused to motorists.
