A street in Royton described as a 'fly-tipping hotspot' has allegedly had fresh waste dumped in the area, just days after the community staged a litter pick, which has since mysteriously disappeared.
Residents in Royton have claimed New Coin Street, near Oldham Academy North, has become a prime spot for fly-tipping in recent weeks.
Footage captured by a concerned member of the public less than two weeks ago showed household waste was piled high near the river, including a sofa, bathtub and mattress as well as building materials and litter.
While Oldham Council were alerted to the problem and cleared away many of the materials, on Saturday, January 21, residents also banded together to stage a litter pick where they gathered dozens of bags in their efforts.
However, just days later at approximately 3pm on Monday (January 23), a van was allegedly seen discarding bags of litter and waste in the same spot.
The resident who saw the van, who wishes to remain anonymous, took three photographs of the incident.
The images appear to show bin bags and wooden pallets were dumped on a woodland path.
A resident said he saw the latest litter drop himself when he was walking his dog on Monday.
Yet by the following morning, the area had been cleared up again though it remains a mystery as to who took the waste away.
The Council said it had also been cleared by the time they attended the area on Tuesday morning.
But angry residents have since taken to social media to voice their concern with many calling for CCTV and other means of deterrents as well as large rocks to prevent vehicles from accessing the area.
One comment read: "Absolutely disgusting. All that hard work you did at the weekend - I'm fuming for you. You did an excellent job."
Another said: "Pity they didn’t get a registration number. And the cheek of doing it in daylight, too."
One of the litter pickers added: "I knew it would happen, I didn't think it would be so quick."
"Definitely need some deterrent around there otherwise it's just going to carry on", said another.
Councillor Hannah Roberts, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said at the time: “Fly-tipping, dumping of waste and littering is a national problem, and these latest images are sadly another example of the inexcusable and illegal behaviour by some individuals – it is absolutely disgraceful."
Oldham Council has invested extra resources into tackling fly-tipping through the Don't Trach Oldham campaign which has seen 459 people fined and 54 successfully prosecuted through the courts.
Councillor Roberts continued: “Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for dumping the waste in this area and we encourage anyone with CCTV footage or other information, to contact Environmental Services on 0161 770 4056.
“Given there are several large items that have been dumped in this area, I’d like to remind residents who pay people to take away their rubbish, to check the person has a waste carriers licence.
"If you don’t, and the waste is later found dumped, then you could be the one in trouble."
