An Oldham woman has been left with broken ribs, skull gashes, and internal bleeding after a crash with a car while on her mobility scooter.

The crash happened on Crompton Way near the Shell station in Shaw on December 22.

Police had initially said the woman was taken to hospital with leg and head injuries which were not thought to be serious.

The woman's daughter, who wishes not to be named, however, has said her mother is now in an induced coma at the critical care unit in the Manchester Royal Infirmary – and has praised hospital staff for being ‘absolutely phenomenal’.

The 67-year-old uses a mobility scooter due to issues with her hip, which she is currently waiting to get replaced.

However, her hip replacement has been delayed while she undergoes treatment for bladder cancer.

On top of this, the woman is the main carer for her husband, who uses a wheelchair and hoists in their house due to muscular dystrophy.

Her daughter said: “From what I’ve ascertained from the actual incident, she was three-quarters of the way across the road, she kept saying the road was clear when we got to the hospital.

“She was crossing the road towards the petrol station at the crossing, she just kept saying it was clear.”

At this point of the road, Crompton Way has five main traffic lanes, plus a slip road for turning.

She added: “They got her to Manchester Royal Infirmary, who have been absolutely amazing.

“She had two large gashes on the back of her skull, it wasn’t until yesterday when they took her down to theatre that I could actually see her skull.

“She’s got difficulties with her lungs, I thought she only had two broken ribs but the consultant yesterday said she’s got a lot of broken ribs.

"She has a drain between two of the ribs to drain blood where she’s bleeding from the damage behind her lungs.

“Her lungs are still a concern to them, and they may have to operate on her ribs today. On the left side, she’s got a perforated spleen and I think it’s a perforated kidney.

“She has a broken pelvis, both of her femurs above the knees are broken and her tibia on the left leg is broken.

“They operated yesterday and both of her legs are in metal frames now, she was in theatre for a good six or seven hours. She’s on a ventilator and in an induced coma now.”

The woman continued: “It’s my mum, you only get one mum don’t you? I just want her to be okay.

“She is a fighter, before they put her in the induced coma she was talking, she’s obviously on a heck of a lot of painkillers, but she’s actually smiling and trying to have a laugh as much as she can.

“The consultant said yesterday that she’s a remarkable woman, she’s strong and he couldn’t believe how good she looked in her face.”

No arrests have been made, with the driver of the motor vehicle assisting police officers, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Councillor Hannah Roberts, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, said: “I’m sorry to hear of the accident and send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the resident who was struck by a driver on Crompton Way.

“It would be inappropriate for the council, as the highway authority, to comment on the details of the incident until we have the police report on the collision and we can fully understand what caused it”.
