Oldham’s brightest students will be challenged as part of a new initiative launching in 10 of the borough’s schools.

At least 200 young Oldhamers aged 14 and 15 will take part in a new initiative aimed at preparing them for sixth form and university life.

Oldham Sixth Form College has launched the Varsity Academy, a year-long initiative to “stretch and challenge” some of the town’s brightest young minds.

The teenagers on the programme will receive extra support from academics at the University of Oxford, as well as attend four visits to Oldham Sixth Form College for lectures and tutorials in science, maths, English and humanities.

They will also have the chance to enter competitions against peers on similar programmes across the country.

The 10 schools involved are; Failsworth Academy, Hathershaw College, Blessed John Henry Newman College, Leesbrook Academy, Oasis Academy, The Radclyffe School, Oldham Academy North, Royton & Crompton Academy, Waterhead Academy, and Saddleworth School.

Each school has chosen 20 students to take part.

Chloe Butler, a former Oldham Sixth Form College student, now in her final year of an English degree at the University of Manchester, attended the launch event on November 22 to support her sister, Liv, who is in Year 10 at Saddleworth School.

She said: “This is an incredible opportunity for pupils to develop their knowledge and academic skills so that they can feel more prepared for future study and gain confidence in themselves and their abilities.

“I would have absolutely loved the chance to challenge myself and learn from fellow students and the college’s highly experienced teachers.

“After hearing the passionate speeches from teachers and the inspiring case studies, Liv came away from the event inspired to explore new perspectives and ways of thinking.”

The Varsity Academy programme will culminate in a graduation ceremony in November 2023 to celebrate the achievements of the 200 students.

Dr Richard Lee, assistant principal at Oldham Sixth Form College, and founder of the Varsity Academy, said: “Throughout our 30-year history, our college has established a reputation for offering outstanding support to all our students, including the most able.

“We have specific programmes, like our Oxbridge Group and Aspiring Medics’ and Lawyers’ Programmes, to help them reach their aspirations.

“Research suggests that it is never too early for students to work at developing higher level knowledge and skills, or to begin thinking about their future progression routes.

“The Varsity Academy is our way of contributing to this process and we are really grateful for the schools’ wholehearted support in establishing the project. We cannot wait to start working with these amazing students.”
