Proposals to change which areas are included in parliamentary constituencies across the country have been published by the Boundary Commission for England.

The major change for Oldham would be a difference in which areas are included within Failsworth's constituency.

Failsworth is currently part of the parliamentary constituency of Ashton-under-Lyne and Failsworth, represented by deputy Labour leader Angela Raynor.

Assistant commissioners at the Boundary Commission, however, have now recommended Failsworth become part of the Manchester Central constituency alongside areas such as Deansgate and Ancoats.

The commission's report for the North West of England, released yesterday, did not include any other major changes to Oldham.

This includes a rejection of a proposal to include Chadderton in the full title for Oldham West and Royton.

On the Failsworth changes, the report explains how the electorate of the existing Ashton constituency is below the permitted electoral range, which for 2023 has been set at between 69,724 and 77,062.

It has therefore been proposed that the wards of Dukinfield, Dukinfield Stalybridge, Mossley, and Stalybridge North are added to Ashton.

This would put it above the permitted range, however, and means the wards of Failsworth East and Failsworth West have been recommended to be moved to a different constituency altogether.

There was a suggestion of creating a Failsworth and Droylsden constituency but this was decided against due to the fact it would cross three local authorities, the geographical separation of the two areas by the River Medlock and evidence that the two areas do not share a community of interest.

It has therefore been proposed by the assistant commissioners to add Failsworth East and West to the Manchester Central constituency after they were persuaded by evidence that Failsworth is closely linked to east Manchester.

As for the rest of Oldham, the constituencies of Oldham West and Royton and Oldham East and Saddleworth will remain unchanged.

There had been a suggestion considered to exchange the Alexandra and St Mary’s wards in Oldham East and Saddleworth with the Royton North and Royton South wards in Oldham West and Royton, however, this has not been recommended to go ahead.

Both Jim McMahon MP and Debbie Abrahams MP had written to the commission arguing the changes would be unnecessary and of no electoral value.

Mr McMahon said he was "disappointed" that proposals to include Chadderton in the name of his constituency were not taken up by the Commission.

He said: "This represents a missed opportunity to represent the second largest town in the constituency and one which makes up 31 per cent of the constituency’s population."

The MP said he will continue to push for the change before the final report is released in July 2023.
